IMO Ballast Water Management Convention - New G8 Approved BWTS up to 4-9-2020

Circular Ref: O(20)93

The International Ballast Water Management Convention (BWM Convention) entered into force on 8th September 2017 and as of 4thSeptember 2020, according to IMO’s GISIS Status of Treaties database, the number of Contracting Governments was 86 representing 91.12% of the world's merchant fleet tonnage.

The 8th September 2019 marked the 2nd anniversary of entry into force (EIF) of the BWM Convention and therefore over the next 5 years ships considered to be existing ships at the time of EIF would be required to comply with the D-2 ballast water discharge standard from the date of their 1st IOPP renewal on or after 8 September 2019. This will require the installation and use of an approved Ballast Water Management System (BWMS).

From  from the 28th of October 2020, all new Ballast Water Management systems installed and used to comply with the BWM Convention must be approved in accordance with the IMO G8 Code for Approval of Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS Code).  Below, for members interest, is the current list of BWTS systems approved in accordance with the BWMS Code kindly supplied by ABS Huston up to 4-9-2020.

Note: Installed** – In accordance with the BWM Convention “Installed” in respect of a ship means the contractual date of delivery of the Ballast Water Management system to the ship. In the absence of such a date, the word "installed" means the actual date of delivery of the Ballast Water Management system to the ship
