FOR INFORMATION: CONTAINERSHIP FIRES - INITIAL COUNTER PROPOSALS MADE IN THE IUMI EXPERT GROUP

Circular Ref: O(21)45

The International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) has established an expert group on containership fires, in which feedback is invited on fire protection measures with the intention of preparing a paper to the IMO’s eighth session of the Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE 8, 28 February – 4 March 2022).

The  ICS participates in this group with the intention of:

· monitoring the developments without representing any positions; and

· circulating any draft IMO proposals from the group to Members for consideration, as appropriate.

The attached (Annex) is a draft summary of the initial proposals made by  the group, and on which various parties provided feedback to IUMI. Currently, IUMI is working on the feedback received with a view to incorporating it in a revised draft, which ICS understands will take the form of a submission, and on which further rounds of feedback will be invited, until finalisation and submission of a formal paper with proposals regarding containership fire detection and protection measures to SSE 8 (estimated by mid-November).

Members are invited to note the above information. Any comments members may have should be sent, by 31st August, to George Charalampidis, ICS Secretary to the Container and Dangerous Goods Panel
