Green Methanol OGV Workshop

Circular Ref: A(24)128

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) positions itself as a leading bunkering hub for green marine or zero emission (ZE) fuels, with the first step of liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering will soon be ready. A bunkering hub serves to meet the demand of ocean-going vessels (OGV) as own use and cargo for trade, for various uses not confining to shipping.

All forecasts on the shipping sector’s future energy mix, due to regulatory pressures of the upcoming FuelEU Maritime and mid-term measures of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), suggest that green Methanol will account for a substantial share in order to meet IMO’s indicative checkpoints and 2050 goal.

To this end, the Institute for the Environment of the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) would like to support the HKSAR Government (HKSARG), coordinate the relevant experts, maritime stakeholders and trades, and organize the OGV Workshop on green Methanol. Noting that methanol-capable OGVs are on the market and methanol bunkering has been conducted, the workshop aims to facilitate early adoption of methanol bunkering.
