Mr. Alexander Brandt, a partner at international law firm Reed Smith, has been invited by the HKSOA to present on the UK, EU, and U.S. current sanctions trends in the maritime and commodities sector. As you would expect, the sands with respect of the sanctions landscape continue to shift, fuelled by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
Whilst sanctions laws have been in place for some time now, in the past two years they have had a widespread and holistic impact on businesses, corporate structure, supply chains, payment terms, and contractual terms. There are growing nuances across the different sanctions regimes, with several cases before the English court finally putting certain sanctions legislative provisions to the test. Further, we are increasingly seeing more companies in Asia being designated under Western sanctions regimes, materially impacting their business.
The pace of change and the complexity of the guidance being put forward have meant that keeping up with sanctions requirements and obligations is becoming an increasing challenge, especially for international businesses needing Western services. This seminar will discuss the latest sanctions decisions, explore the implications for companies in Hong Kong and the wider region, and discuss the direction of travel for future sanctions activity. We shall highlight key considerations, offer practical tips for keeping up with the latest regulatory changes and explore actionable steps for ensuring continuing compliance.
