ICS ACADEMY E-LEARNING COURSE LAUNCH, OPERATING THE ENGINE UNDER LOW LOADS

Circular Ref: O(24)54

ICS is pleased to announce the launch today of a new e-learning course Operating the Engine Under Low Loads. Members are invited to share the promotional flyer with members (attached in Annex A), with further details about the e-learning course.
About the ICS Academy Operating the Engine Under Low Loads e-learning course

Low load operations, or ‘slow steaming,’ are an increasingly common practice in a ship’s engine room that can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Low load operations are generally considered to be operations where the engine operates between 10% and 40% of maximum continuous rating (MCR). During these operations, the engine crew need to pay careful attention to the condition of the engine, particularly for fouling of components and ensuring appropriate lubrication.

Operating the Engine under Low Loads uses scenario-based learning to guide learners through the necessary checks to ensure a well-maintained engine during low load operations. For example, the cleanliness of the boiler and turbocharger, scavenge and exhaust space is detailed as well as optimal cylinder lubrication.

A main component of this e-learning course is a 3D model of a typical two-stroke engine. This interactive feature allows learners to better understand the different maintenance conditions of a main engine and best practice when completing a two-stroke low load operation inspection report.

Operating the Engine under Low Loads is based on the best-selling publication, Engine Room Procedures Guide, which provides best practice approaches to operating and maintaining engine rooms, in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

About the ICS Academy

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) Academy provides on-the-go access to practical e-learning to help shipping companies ensure best practices and regulatory compliance on board. Developed by seafarers, for seafarers, and drawing on the collective experience of more than 80% of the world’s shipping fleet, ICS Academy courses complement ICS Publications, giving crew access to on board procedures and training that work together seamlessly.

Globally applicable to all ship types, and regularly updated to meet the changing needs of the shipping industry, our e-learning also provides a time-efficient learning experience and flexibility for crew to study at their own pace. Interactive content enables seafarers to apply practical guidance to real-life scenarios on board, and the latest learning techniques are used to help learners retain knowledge.

Our user-friendly learning management system makes it easy for training managers to monitor learners’ progress, and for seafarers to complete e-learning, all within the ICS Academy. Certificates are issued for every course a learner completes and are accessible at any time on our learning management system.
