This month’s Decision Maker interview is with John Denholm CBE, who was unanimously elected by the board as the new Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping at the ICS Annual General Meeting on the 22 June 2026. The decision-maker interview discusses his main priorities, important shifts in the maritime industry, decarbonisation, and attracting the next generation of seafarers.
The June news analysis focuses on ‘Redrawing the Trade Map.’ The article looks at how as businesses diversify supply chains and governments pursue new trade agreements, global commerce is becoming more distributed, impacting shipping routes, cargo flows and emerging trade corridors.
This month’s ICS in Action kicks off with the announcement that the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) Board of Directors has appointed John Denholm CBE as Chairman of the Board. John succeeds Emanuele Grimaldi, who concludes four years as Chairman after leading the organisation through a period of unprecedented challenge and change for international shipping.
The ICS is pleased to announce the publication of the new ICS Maritime Barometer Report. The report was launched at the annual Shaping the Future of Shipping Summit, co-hosted with Italian Confederation of Shipowners (CONFITARMA), in Rome. The Barometer is a data-driven report, formed of survey responses from C-Suite decision-makers from across the industry, nearly 53% of whom are shipowners and 39% ship managers. It aims to provide a comprehensive overview of how this resilient sector is evolving to maintain world trade in an increasingly complex and uncertain environment.
During June, the ICS we have also published the Seafarer Workforce Report in collaboration with BiIMCO. The Seafarer Workforce Report is published every five years and was last issued in 2021. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the supply and demand balance for STCW certified seafarers.
Finally, the European Shipowners, ECSA and the ICS have released an independent study on the key areas of divergence between the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SRR) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Hong Kong Convention (HKC). The study examines the significant change that the new global standards have brought after the HKC entered into force.
