(Urgent) Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks

Circular Ref: A(26)92

Recently, we have received member enquiries about the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks (Nairobi Convention). Briefly, presently, Hong Kong Flag vessels would need to apply for their wreck removal certificates (for both registration and annual certificate renewal) from the Shenzhen Maritime Safety Administration. Some ship owners and managers are of the view that this (annual) task is laborious and has caused inconvenience to their operations.

We have arranged for the Hong Kong Marine Department to meet with our membership to discuss the subject matter. Details are as follows –

Date: 16 July 2026 (Thursday)
Time: 10am to 10.45am
Venue: HKSOA office, 12/F, Queen’s Centre, 58 Queen’s Road East, Wanchai, Hong Kong

If you would like to join the discussion and exchange views with the Hong Kong Marine Department and fellow members, please let us know by 13 July 2026 (Monday). (Please feel free to share, at the meeting, your experience or any particular related incidents/issues that your companies have encountered.)

Separately, as you may know from our circular ref: A(26)86, the Association Secretariat is hosting a briefing session for the membership also on 16 July 2026 (Thursday) at 11am on some other recent issues of concern to the shipping industry. This briefing session will follow the meeting with the Hong Kong Marine Department on the Nairobi Convention.

You are welcome to sign up for the discussion with the Hong Kong Marine Department and/or the briefing session by the Association Secretariat, by sending a reply to this circular.

Thank you for your attention.
