We would like to express our deepest sorrow at the passing of Dr Helmut Sohmen OBE, former Chairman of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association from 1987 to 1989.

Dr Sohmen was a strong supporter of the Association and the maritime industry. Describing himself as “an Austrian national but a citizen of the world”, Dr Sohmen has made valuable contribution to the global community, including Hong Kong.

Under his chairmanship, the Association played an active role in both Hong Kong and international affairs, and Dr. Sohmen served as our representative on the Basic Law Consultative Committee. From 1989 onwards, Dr Sohmen also acted as President of the Baltic and International Maritime Council.

Outside the industry, Dr Sohmen had many interests and was closely involved in local academic and cultural development. He was also a Legislative Councillor of Hong Kong.

Dr Sohmen was a legend of the global business community, providing a great example for many leaders and entrepreneurs. More recently, he attended the Association 65th anniversary gala dinner (photo), again sharing his many inspiring stories with us!

Our sincere condolences to Dr Sohmen’s family. Dr Sohmen will be deeply missed by all of us.
