ICS LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS MAY 2023

Circular Ref: A(23)91

Please find attached the May edition of the ICS Leadership insights.

The May 2023 edition has  decision maker piece from Bjorn Otto Sverdrup, Chair of the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative’s (OGCI) executive committee. In this exclusive interview Bjorn shares his views on current solutions to support shipping’s ambitious green goals, including collective action on emission reductions and carbon capture. It is really promising to see other sectors recognising shipping’s major role in the green energy transition. We need all sectors to work together to find solutions to this most pressing issue.

Also ICS has launched its inaugural Barometer report which presents a snapshot of industry sentiment that, if used by the shipping community, can advance collaboration and present a united voice to regulators, national governments, and global stakeholders. It notably highlighted the growing risk of unilateral or fragmented regulation, highlighting the need for regulators to pursue a long-term strategy to align with maritime's global regulatory framework.

Safety should be at the heart of how the shipping industry operates. With a growing global demand for lithium, more specifically lithium-ion batteries, ship operators must address safety issues around the transport of these batteries.  A  news article looks at lessons that shipping can learn from the aviation industry.

In other news articles, you can read about how increased calls for  ESG  reporting is creating a greater drive for data verification and standardisation, and an article on the changes that some regulations are having on harbour craft in some regions.
