- Cyber Security Workbook for On Board Ship Use, Sixth Edition and
- Shipboard Response to Stowaways and Distressed People in Small Boats – 2025-26 Edition
1) Biofouling, Biosecurity and Hull Cleaning, Second Edition
The build-up of biofouling can have a significant impact on ship hydrodynamics and energy efficiency as well as interfere with efficient operation of internal seawater systems.
It can also threaten the marine environment through the transfer of non-native invasive species, or through the use of anti-fouling systems containing certain toxic substances.
This publication identifies ship structures that are vulnerable to biofouling, factors affecting the rate of build-up and the effect of biofouling on performance and operating costs.
It looks in detail at biofouling management, including the use of biocidal and non-biocidal paints and coatings, corrosion, marine growth prevention systems, in-water cleaning and
treatment in dry dock. It briefly discusses several examples of environmental research initiatives into the effects of biofouling.
The publication sets our current biofouling legislative requirements, including IMO’s recently revised 2023 Biofouling Guidelines,
updates to the international convention on the control of harmful Anti-fouling systems on ships ( AFS Convention) and
regional biofouling legislation.
It provides templates for the Biofouling Management Plan and the Biofouling Record Book from the updated 2023 Biofouling Guidelines.
Finally, it provides a selection of data sheets summarising the services offered and area of operation of hull cleaning and inspection companies worldwide.
This section includes world maps to enable readers to quickly identify companies operating in particular geographic locations.
The second edition has been produced by Witherbys, BIMCO and ICS.
2) Cyber Security Workbook for On Board Ship Use, Sixth Edition
Cyber risk management should be an inherent part of safety and security and should be considered at all levels of the company, including senior management ashore and onboard personnel.
This Workbook has been designed as a practical, straightforward guide to support the Master and officers on board ship (Part I – Onboard Practical Considerations).
It is designed to facilitate understanding and good collaboration between individual ships, onshore IT departments and equipment manufacturers (Part II – Shore Management Considerations).
The Workbook has been fully revised and updated and contains new guidance on:
Industry guidelines and regulatory requirements, including IACS UR E26 and E27 cyber security in port ship inspections and port state control malware detection and prevention phishing risks.
Detailed case studies and diagrams have been added to help illustrate cyber risks.
The Workbook contains 14 checklists and 7 annexes, including Cyber Security Risk Assessment and Creating a Cyber Security Plan.
The Workbook may also be useful to the wider maritime industry. The sixth edition has been produced by Witherbys, BIMCO and ICS.
3) Shipboard Response to Stowaways and Distressed People in Small Boats – 2025-26 Edition
Although stowaways, trafficked individuals, refugees and other migrants may fall into distinct categories requiring different treatment, once on board a ship they are all essentially
unauthorised people who present some common security risks, as well as specific challenges and responsibilities.
These aspects are covered in the book, as well as noting circumstances in which the categories overlap.
The Characteristics of the different groups are examined with reference to regional trends are included.
Detailed guidance is provided on the Master’s responsibilities and appropriate responses for seafarers at all stages in handling the different scenarios, including the duty
to assist those in distress at sea and preventative measures against stowaway activity.
The role of merchant shipping in migrant rescue, alongside the authorities and other organisations involved, is fully discussed, particularly in the context of the Mediterranean region.
Migrant activity in the English Channel is also covered, with procedural guidance provided.
The planning and preparation required to deal effectively with stowaways and large scale rescue at sea is outlined, including reference to ship security plans, security roles and the
necessary crew training.
Key points are summarised throughout the text and wherever possible graphic illustration used to convey information in a more interesting and easily accessible manner.
Annexes provide relevant extracts and summaries of the legal framework, regulations and guidance, along with useful checklists and forms.
The Workbook may also be useful to the wider maritime industry. The sixth edition has been produced by Witherbys, BIMCO and ICS.
