Cyber attacks continue to rank among maritime leaders’ most significant risks to the industry according to the 2025-2026 ICS Maritime Barometer Report.

As the sector becomes increasingly digital and artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled tools grow in popularity, the exposure to cyber risk also escalates.

Cyber security plans and sustained crew training need to be more robust than ever. The Cyber Security Workbook for On Board Ship Use aims to serve as a trusted companion to seafarers and shore-based colleagues alike, helping them understand this threat and safeguard maritime trade.

About Cyber Security Workbook for On Board Ship Use, Eighth Edition

Cyber risk management should be an inherent part of safety and security and should be considered at all levels of the company, including senior management ashore and onboard personnel.

This Workbook has been designed as a practical, straightforward guide to support the Master and officers on board ship (Part I – Onboard Practical Considerations).

It is designed to facilitate understanding and good collaboration between individual ships, onshore IT departments and equipment manufacturers (Part II – Shore Management Considerations).

The Workbook may also be useful to the wider maritime industry.

The Eighth Edition has been fully revised and updated to reflect current industry guidelines and regulatory requirements, as well as developments including cyber security in port, passenger ships, inspections, software updates, malware and phishing. It also introduces new guidance on password security, cyber security drills and crew training, and incident response and recovery, providing shipping companies and crews with updated practical guidance to support day-to-day cyber security risk management.

Detailed case studies and diagrams have been added to help illustrate cyber risks. The Workbook contains 13 Checklists and 6 Annexes, including Cyber Security Risk Assessment and Creating a Cyber Security Plan.
