MEPC 79 - CII, INTERCARGO PAPER ON THE REDUCTION OF GHG EMISSIONS FROM SHIPS

Circular Ref: O(22)55

Please find attached a paper submitted to MEPC79 by INTERCARGO  which details the effects of charterers orders, distance travelled and waiting times on Carbon Intensity Indicators, CII.

The CII Guidelines, as adopted by MPC78, include a number of correction factors, however, several other correction factors that had been proposed were not accepted and thus are not currently included in the Guidelines.

However, the IMO Committee, on conclusion of  agreeing the adoption of the CII invited interested Member States and international organizations to collect relevant data and report it to the Committee ahead of the review of the CII regulations and guidelines by 1 January 2026.

In this document, INTERCARGO highlights some of the challenges faced by bulk carrier shipowners/ship managers (and other segments) and the need for further correction factors and/or voyage adjustments. Similar situations can arise for all ship types depending upon the distance travelled, waiting times and adverse weather.  Further information on the collection and submission of such data will be advised in due course by the ICS.
