PRESS RELEASE: ICS welcomes Bangladesh ratification of the Hong Kong Convention

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) welcomes the leadership shown by principal ship recycling country Bangladesh for agreeing to ratify the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention). 


 


Bangladesh is one of the principal ship recyclers in the world and key to leading the way for safe and sustainable ship recycling practices by ratifying the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention). 

 


The Hong Kong Convention aims to ensure that ships when being recycled after reaching the end of their operational lives, do not pose any unnecessary risk to human health and safety or the environment. Bangladesh’s ratification is a major step leading to to the conventions implementation.  


 


Ship recycling will be of significant importance in meeting net zero emissions by 2050 as the existing fleet is decommissioned in coming years to be replaced by net zero vessels.
