ICS and OCIMF are developing the seventh edition of the joint publication, Peril at Sea and Salvage: A Guide for Masters and invites members to provide feedback on the current, sixth edition and nominate participants to join the working group.

Peril at Sea and Salvage has been a standard reference for Masters on board tankers for more than 45 years. It outlines the actions a Master should take when confronted with an emergency: from the initial assessment and immediate actions, through to towage or salvage arrangements, as may be necessary. It also explains the importance of prompt notification to relevant parties, particularly coastal states and the company. A section is included with recommendations for a company’s shore-based personnel. The publication was last updated in 2020. Further details are available on the ICS website.

ICS and OCIMF are seeking support in developing the seventh edition in two ways.

1. Review of Peril at Sea and Salvage: A Guide for Masters, Sixth Edition

Feedback is welcome from anyone who uses the current edition from within member shipping companies, including those outside the tanker sector who use the guide on board their fleet, without the commitment to also join the working group. All relevant feedback will be reviewed by the working group, who will be responsible for deciding what changes to incorporate into the seventh edition.

Reviewers will be provided with a copy of the sixth edition, the scope of the revision as approved by the Peril Steering Group, and questions to consider in the review by 3 August 2026. Reviewers will be invited to return a marked-up copy of the PDF with comments or provide written feedback in an email, sent to the ICS Technical Content Development Manager, within 30 days of receiving the review copy.

2. Working Group for Peril at Sea and Salvage: A Guide for Masters, Seventh Edition

Members who would like to join the working group for the seventh edition should submit nominations to join the Peril Working Group. The Working Group will be responsible for ensuring all content is factually accurate, safe, up to date, user-friendly and applicable to the audience, and reflects current industry best practice.

In order to create a balanced working group, we encourage nominations from companies with all fleet sizes, operating in different locations, and representing masters and shoreside operations teams. Working group members will be requested to attend meetings and intersessionally review drafts from Q3 2026 to Q2 2027. Meetings will be run in a hybrid format, and members of the working group can attend remotely or in person at the ICS offices in London.

Working group members will be provided with a copy of the sixth edition, the project plan (including the scope of work, schedule and responsibilities for all stakeholders), and questions to consider in the review by 3 August 2026. Working group members will be invited to return a marked-up copy of the PDF with comments or provide written feedback in an email, sent to the ICS Technical Content Development Manager, within 30 days of receiving the review copy. The first working group meeting is expected to be held in September 2026 and will last approximately half a day.
