The Hong Kong Shipowners Association and Howden Specialty are pleased to invite you to a marine risk and insurance update over breakfast on 27th March 2024 to be held at the Blue Room in Soho House in Hong Kong.

The event will be opened by the HKSOA, setting the scene for the morning and identifying some of the recent work done by the HKSOA in supporting their membership’s activities.

Subsequently, we will review the risk and insurance landscape as it stood five years ago and how risk management and war risk insurance have emerged back into view over the intervening period.

We will next take the participants through some of the legal and contractual considerations of deviating from a vessel’s direct route of passage, reviewing the common law position of executing a voyage, BIMCO’s war clauses, off-hire considerations, how deviation is considered under Hague-Visby Rules, and some thoughts applicable for owners and for charterers as they execute long-term time charters.

Finally, we will outline the state of the war risks insurance market, the availability of insurance, how to ease administration, and some examples of how both owners and charterers can better plan ahead for dealing with additional costs. The session will also review a number of commonly underinsured exposures that owners and operators should review to ensure a suitable degree of war risks cover is in place.

We will round off the discussion with a Q&A session and some time for further networking.
