The ICS is developing the third edition of its bestselling Engine Room Procedures Guide, which is used on board more than 10,000 ships, and invites participants from shipping companies to contribute expertise by joining the publications working group. The working group will advise ICS on the publication’s content to help raise safety standards across the global fleet. They will ensure the publication represents the latest best practices on board to ensure ship and crew safety, security, environmental performance and welfare. The guide will be suitable for all ships.

The Engine Room Procedures Guide, Third Edition is expected to be published in early-2028. It provides authoritative and comprehensive guidance on engine room procedures, to ensure that ships’ engine rooms are operated and managed safely while protecting the environment. A companion to the globally recognised ICS Bridge Procedures Guide and new Deck Procedures Guide, the Engine Room Procedures Guide can be used on all types of merchant ship.

The guide is an invaluable tool for Chief Engineers and other members of the engineering team, as well as shoreside technical teams and training institutions.

It is recommended that a copy is carried on board every merchant ship.

Members of the working group will be requested to review the current draft, provide comments and attend a small number of meetings between Q3 2026 and Q2/3 2027. Meetings will be run in a hybrid format, and members of the working group can attend remotely or in person at the ICS offices in London. Each meeting is expected to be no more than 90 minutes. Working group members benefit from engagement with contemporaries at other shipping companies and receive an acknowledgement in the book, an enhanced social media profile and a free copy on publication.
